15 WONDERS – The fashion revolution from Finland

The issue of sustainable development is currently shaking up the international fashion world. The overproduction of textiles, the huge amounts of waste and challenges in the production of materials are significant problems of our time.

In the international fashion industry, Finland is considered a pioneer for material solutions of the future: In Finland, various ecological materials have been developed to replace resource-intensive materials such as cotton and to respond to the global problem of textile waste. The discussion focuses on new technologies that enable the production of textile fibres from agricultural waste, wood or textile waste without harmful chemicals and with low water consumption.

Thanks to a fashion design teaching programme at Aalto University and a number of award-winning young designers, Finland has made an international name for itself in the field of fashion design. At the university, design students experiment a lot with materials, create new materials and develop innovative combinations from recycled materials.

The exhibition "15 WONDERS - The Fashion Revolution from Finland" presents material research by Aalto University students and new ecological material innovations in 15 outfits.

The spatial design of the exhibition was realised in collaboration with Tauko Design using upcycled hotel textiles such as pillowcases as well as banners from construction sites and discarded cords from Finnish army stocks.

The concept of Aurelia Paumelle is based on the conscious consumption and recycling of old clothes. In an upcycling workshop, participants can create a new piece from an old sweater and then personalise it. In order for the garment to fit perfectly, the participants will have at their disposal a set of clothes that have been made by the designer herself. The workshop is then conducted under her guidance and with the help of professional tools and sewing machines. The entire process of making a garment can be experienced, raising awareness of slow fashion and upcycling old clothes.

    Talbot Runhof - Store Event

During a store event in their Berlin boutique, Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof will not only present their latest creations, the launch of the new TALBOT RUNHOF Perfume Collection is also planned as a further element of establishing themselves as an internationally important fashion and lifestyle label "Made in Germany". In addition to a model presentation and a tasting of the five new fragrances, there will be a "Dead Stock" installation as a contribution to the sustainability debate to draw attention to one of the biggest sustainability problems in the fashion industry: Surplus goods and fabrics that are no longer needed in production and by fabric suppliers, but have already consumed valuable energy in their manufacture.

The two designers deliberately searched for "forgotten" fabrics and materials, dead stock so to speak, to show that in a creative process something new and innovative can be created from old, discarded materials. The result is a small capsule with new models - skirts, dresses and jumpsuits - which we will show in Berlin.

Designed for circularity – textile innovations from Finland

We need a sustainability revolution in how we make, use and dispose of textiles.

How can we construct designs suitable for long-term use? Which designs are possible to recycle at the end of their lifetime?
Does textile waste and circular economy make out the basis of success for the fashion of the future?
What prevents and enables textile recycling? How can we recycle textile materials more effectively, creating a circular system?
Finland’s long tradition in design, digital innovations and cellulose processing are now offering an excellent basis to solve some of the most striking challenges in the textile industry. The change starts already on the designer’s desk, makes use of new material innovations, and restructures the way the garments are produced and used. All this is based on data transparency throughout the production chain.

Associate Professor of design and fashion, Kirsi Niinimäki from Aalto University in Helsinki, will lead the discussion with Petri Alava/Infinited Fiber Company, Elina Ibounig/Marimekko, Laura Roman/Halti and Ina Budde/Circular Fashion.

Petri Alava, CEO, will share the story of Infinited Fiber Company and its technology for creating premium textile fiber from textile waste.
Elina Ibounig, Head of Sustainability & New Business Development at Marimekko will share Marimekko’s new ambitious sustainability strategy and talk about Marimekko’s journey towards leaving no trace.
Laura Roman, Head of Operations, will illustrate how the sustainability challenges are turned into an asset at Finnish outdoor brand Halti.
Ina Budde, Co-Founder and CEO of circular fashion will share experience on building a software solution for circular design and closed loop recycling

    When: Thursday, 9.9.2021, 14:00–16:00 MEZ

The concept of Aurelia Paumelle is based on the conscious consumption and recycling of old clothes. In an upcycling workshop, participants can create a new piece from an old sweater and then personalise it. In order for the garment to fit perfectly, the participants will have at their disposal a set of clothes that have been made by the designer herself. The workshop is then conducted under her guidance and with the help of professional tools and sewing machines. The entire process of making a garment can be experienced, raising awareness of slow fashion and upcycling old clothes.

    OMNIA AETERNA - Sustainable Couture

During the Berlin Fashion Week GALLERY MALINA presents the womenswear collection “Omnia Aeterna” by MALINA-Womenswear. In Latin the title “Omnia Aeterna” means “everything eternal” and the concept based on the fact of forgetting and remembering of our actions.
The collection “Omnia Aeterna” pursues the questions: What happened? What is now? And what will happen? The garments are therefore shown in their production processes, i. e. from the paper model to the finished look and associated with fashion collages. Biological materials are transformed into new experimental looks using natural products such as shells and flowers by recycling processes. The looks are completed in cooperation with the artist Ute Faber and her Shoe Sculptures.

MATERIAL MATTERS - an interdisciplinary exhibition by VBM - Verein Berliner Modedesigner*innen at PLATTE.Berlin.
Materials are valuable: creativity is the key to the careful use of our resources. The carefully curated selection of art, fashion and design installations inspires the audience to understand materials of various kinds for new purposes and in alternative applications.
It sets delightful impulses to raise awareness among designers - creatives and consumers of the power of choice they have in design and consumption. The exhibition includes an upcycling workshop with jewellery artist Denise Raytan and fashion designer Amelie Riech on 11 and 12 September as well as a panel talk on "Forms and Formats - NFTs & CO2", conceived by VBM board member Cläre Caspar on 15 September at 19:00.

    STREETWARE saved item

Berlin Must Go On - Walk with us!
    Catwalk of the socio-economic utopia

In the context of Berlin Fashion Week, Berlin's most political fashion label challenges fast fashion, transforms discarded textiles into prêt-à-porter and stages social plastic.
In order to contribute to the formation of sustainable standards of fair production chains and decolonised lifestyle patterns with Saved Items, STREETWARE organises the demonstrative catwalk of socio-economic utopia. The fashion highlights presented come directly from the asphalt of the streets and serve as a provocative starting point to enter into a conversation about sustainability, modes of production and social practice.
During the catwalk, 50 models not only set fashion standards for a fairer future, but also make an important contribution to the debate on body image and aesthetics.
