15 WONDERS – THE FASHION REVOLUTION FROM FINLAND
The issue of sustainable development is currently shaking up the international fashion world. The overproduction of textiles, the huge amounts of waste and challenges in the production of materials are significant problems of our time.
In the international fashion industry, Finland is considered a pioneer for material solutions of the future: In Finland, various ecological materials have been developed to replace resource-intensive materials such as cotton and to respond to the global problem of textile waste. The discussion focuses on new technologies that enable the production of textile fibres from agricultural waste, wood or textile waste without harmful chemicals and with low water consumption.
Thanks to a fashion design teaching programme at Aalto University and a number of award-winning young designers, Finland has made an international name for itself in the field of fashion design. At the university, design students experiment a lot with materials, create new materials and develop innovative combinations from recycled materials.
The exhibition "15 WONDERS - The Fashion Revolution from Finland" presents material research by Aalto University students and new ecological material innovations in 15 outfits.
The spatial design of the exhibition was realised in collaboration with Tauko Design using upcycled hotel textiles such as pillowcases as well as banners from construction sites and discarded cords from Finnish army stocks.

Designed for circularity – textile innovations from Finland
We need a sustainability revolution in how we make, use and dispose of textiles.
How can we construct designs suitable for long-term use? Which designs are possible to recycle at the end of their lifetime?
Does textile waste and circular economy make out the basis of success for the fashion of the future?
What prevents and enables textile recycling? How can we recycle textile materials more effectively, creating a circular system?
Finland’s long tradition in design, digital innovations and cellulose processing are now offering an excellent basis to solve some of the most striking challenges in the textile industry. The change starts already on the designer’s desk, makes use of new material innovations, and restructures the way the garments are produced and used. All this is based on data transparency throughout the production chain.
Associate Professor of design and fashion, Kirsi Niinimäki from Aalto University in Helsinki, will lead the discussion with Petri Alava/Infinited Fiber Company, Elina Ibounig/Marimekko, Laura Roman/Halti and Ina Budde/Circular Fashion.
Petri Alava, CEO, will share the story of Infinited Fiber Company and its technology for creating premium textile fiber from textile waste.
Elina Ibounig, Head of Sustainability & New Business Development at Marimekko will share Marimekko’s new ambitious sustainability strategy and talk about Marimekko’s journey towards leaving no trace.
Laura Roman, Head of Operations, will illustrate how the sustainability challenges are turned into an asset at Finnish outdoor brand Halti.

The concept of Aurelia Paumelle is based on the conscious consumption and recycling of old clothes. In an upcycling workshop, participants can create a new piece from an old sweater and then personalise it. In order for the garment to fit perfectly, the participants will have at their disposal a set of clothes that have been made by the designer herself. The workshop is then conducted under her guidance and with the help of professional tools and sewing machines. The entire process of making a garment can be experienced, raising awareness of slow fashion and upcycling old clothes.

During the Berlin Fashion Week GALLERY MALINA presents the womenswear collection “Omnia Aeterna” by MALINA-Womenswear. In Latin the title “Omnia Aeterna” means “everything eternal” and the concept based on the fact of forgetting and remembering of our actions.
The collection “Omnia Aeterna” pursues the questions: What happened? What is now? And what will happen? The garments are therefore shown in their production processes, i. e. from the paper model to the finished look and associated with fashion collages. Biological materials are transformed into new experimental looks using natural products such as shells and flowers by recycling processes. The looks are completed in cooperation with the artist Ute Faber and her Shoe Sculptures.
