Design Research Lab / University of the Arts

The DRLab at the "Universität der Künste Berlin" works on interdisciplinary design research projects, which communicate the gap between technological innovations and the realistic needs of humans. With more than twenty researchers the lab explores intelligent textiles, human-computer interactions and communities in the digital world.

  • Fraunhofer Fokus, Berlin

In 2014 the "Fraunhofer FOKUS" developed prototyped of portable/intelligent applications for M2M-communications for exact localisation of objects and humans for their Project „Smart Wearables“. The researchers use modern technology to provide reliable in- and outdoor-tracking and ensure maximum user-friendliness. The goal was to create portable robust, inconspicuous, affordable devices. The operational area of Smart Wearables/ IoT are diverse and range from tour escorts for extreme athletes and an activity tracker to provide protection for children, to a GPS-tracking-system to monitor and control objects/vehicles for logistics and transport.

  • Fraunhofer ISIT, Itzehoe, business field Wearables and Printed Electronics

Wearables, as in hearing aid or heart rate monitoring watches for the consumer or as part of a functional clothing, such as ski-jackets, which measure the vital parameters of the wearer and sends the results to the phone/computer for further examination. In past years, technologies such as flexible, organic or stretchable electronics were further developed and integrated into Wearables.

  • Fraunhofer IZM, Berlin, Department Smart Sensor Systems

The department "Smart Sensor Systems" of the Frauenhofer IZM focuses on the development of new methods and tools for the goal-driven technology-orientated draft of electronic systems. This is based on development-associated simulations of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic phenomena, but also thermal and mechanical linkage. Already in the concept phase, the different technologies considering the specific functionality and the ability to withstand stress of the appropriate systems can be compared. Functions-, volumes-, reliability- and costanalyses are part of the range of systems that can be realised in the phase of the concept. With aid of these new methods, the prototypes for electronic assemblies and embedded systems can be realised. Among others, Project Wearable Electronics & Electronics in Textiles.

  • Telekom Hubraum

The Telekom bets on Wearables. Wearables are a way to develop topics such as Smart Home, health/fitness, messaging and mobile payments. In cooperation with leading companies, such as Samsung, Bayer, BMW, Ad
